Education

Back to School Program

Every August more than 2000 pre-kindergarten through 8th grade students and their parents visit Manos and work with volunteers to choose school supplies, backpacks and clothing for the upcoming school year.

  •

  • The Back-to-School Program has become a community-wide campaign that brings together church groups, corporations, foundations and individuals, all donating money, supplies, and time to making the program a success.

Computer classes

While computers have become an everyday part of life in the United States, many adults lack the skills to perform the most basic operations. Taught in both English and Spanish, Manos’ computer classes introduce students to basic typing, word processing, Internet navigation, e-mail, and the use of spreadsheets.

English as a Second Language

Manos holds  ESL classes on Monday and Wednesday mornings, and Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Many students work full-time, and have little to no prior knowledge of English. The ESL classes enable them to get jobs or advance in their current positions. Trained volunteers work with students from 18-80 years of age to teach practical life skills like shopping, getting around the city, renting or buying a house, and adjusting to life in the U.S.

Citizenship classes

As a joint effort with ACC, Manos holds citizenship classes every summer. These classes expand students’ knowledge of civics and prepares them for the rigorous exam they must pass to become citizens.

Financial Literacy

This class is often taught in conjunction with the citizenship class, and introduces students to the U.S. banking system. Topics include opening checking and savings accounts, using credit cards, writing and cashing checks, taking out loans, buying cars and homes, and investing. These skills often empower students to save money for their children’s education or open their own businesses.
